Safe Rhode Island:
Violence and Injury Prevention Program

Safe Rhode Island Strategic Planning

Injury Prevention Strategic Planning Process

Rhode Island Injury Advisory Council (IAC) Purpose:

The IAC will set state priorities for strategies for preventing injuries that are promising and develop a state plan reflecting statewide, population-based level recommendations.

Proposed IAC Membership, Structure, and:

The IAC will be a “Blue Ribbon Panel” of 5-7 individuals.  The first meeting of the BRP will take place in September 2003. Two to three follow-up meetings will be scheduled October and November 2003 to set overall priorities for Rhode Island.

1. Meeting 1 Work Plan: An orientation to the CDC funded injury prevention program will be provided along with a broad overview of RI injury data. The group will decide on five broad injury categories to be addressed in a Rhode Island state injury prevention plan.

2. Follow up meeting Work plan: The IAC will review state injury data briefs addressing each of the 5 broad categories and select specific subcategories within each based on the following criteria:

  • Responding to data based need
  • Reflective of RI political priorities
  • Known/proven effective interventions
  • Feasible

Data briefs will include breakdowns within each category. For example, within the broad category of motor vehicle injuries information will be presented on motor vehicle occupants, motorcyclists, pedestrians, etc.; on risk factors such as, alcohol involvement, use of protective devices; and demographics, such as age, gender, geography, ethnicity.  With this information, the IAC will set priorities and benchmarks within each category.

Rhode Island Injury Planning Council (IPC):

Once the five injury categories have been selected, task forces consisting of key stakeholders will be convened for each priority area. The membership of each task force will form the IPC. The task forces will be lead by chairs with expertise in the identified priority areas. Task forces will recommend impact objectives and implementation strategies to be included in the state plan.

A draft of the state plan will be available for review in September 2004
