Diabetes Prevention and Control Program

Type 1 Diabetes

Type 1 diabetes, where the body produces no  insulin, is one of the most common chronic diseases in children.  This type of diabetes tends to run in families, usually peaks around puberty, and whites have a higher incidence of Type 1 diabetes than other racial groups.

Warning signs of Type 1 Diabetes
(Symptoms may occur suddenly)

  • Frequent urination
  • Unusual thirst
  • Constant hunger
  • Unusual weight loss 
  • Extreme fatigue
  • Irritability
  • Fruity odor of breath

There is no current cure for diabetes but it can be treated.  Family/social support, daily care and treatment, can allow you or your child to take control of diabetes to lead a healthy, active, and fun-filled life.
