Rhode Island Arthritis Action Program

What is Arthritis?

"" Arthritis is an inflammation or degeneration in or around a joint.
"" The most common forms are:couple walking

  • Osteoarthritis –affects the hip, knee, foot, hand and other joints (also called “degenerative joint disease”)
  • Rheumatoid arthritis

"" Arthritis is the leading cause of disability in this country
"" Arthritis limits daily activities of more than 7 million U.S. citizens
"" Arthritis may be prevented through weight control and injury prevention
"" Arthritis pain and activity limitations can be reduced through:

  • Early diagnosis
  • Effective provider care and self-management

o Physical Activity
o Weight loss
o Proper use of arthritis medications

  • Physical and occupational therapy
  • Joint replacement surgery
