Extreme Cold

The elderly are especially susceptible to extreme cold temperatures. Some helpful hints include:

  • check on elderly family, friends and neighbors frequently
  • watch out for falls outdoors that can leave one unable to get back inside
  • dress warmly, even for short outdoor trips to the mailbox. A fall or locked door can leave you exposed to extreme cold.
  • dress warmly inside--especially when inactive (sitting); the inability to move easily or think clearly may be symptoms of exposure (hypothermia).
  • Indoor temperature should be set according to activity level, health and medications.  What is an acceptable, fuel-saving temperature for an active family may not be safe for an older person who has difficulty moving or takes certain medications.
  • Wet or damp clothing will hurry the hypothermia process.
  • Even mildly cool room temperatures of 60-65oF can interfere with the body’s ability to regulate its temperature.
  • Alcohol consumption can also lower the body’s ability to retain heat
  • Some illnesses and medications place a person at additional risk.  These include:
  • Slow thyroid or other disorders of the body’s hormone system
  • Stroke or other disorders that cause paralysis and reduced awareness
  • Severe arthritis, Parkinson’s disease or other illnesses that limit activity
  • Any condition that curbs the normal flow of blood
  • Memory disorders
  • Medications used to treat anxiety, depression or nausea and some over-the-counter cold remedies.
